On December 14th, Arshia, one of our grad students of space engineering major, build a replica of a satellite which demonstrated how a space laser ground station -that is a vital component for communication system- works.
Laser beams, these ground stations facilitate high-speed data transmission, enabling a more efficient and secure means of communication in comparison to traditional radio frequency communication.
These ground stations typically consist of precise optical systems for transmitting and receiving laser signals, specialized tracking systems to maintain alignment with orbiting satellites, and sophisticated data processing equipment to handle the high-speed optical data. As space missions increasingly demand higher data transfer rates and lower latency, space laser communication ground stations play a crucial role in ushering in the next generation of space-based communication technologies.
The electrical devices that were used in the circuit are:
- A transistor: is a semiconductor device that amplifies and switches electronic signals. It has three terminals: the emitter, base, and collector. Transistors are commonly used in electronic devices such as computers, radios, and televisions. They have revolutionized the field of electronics and are essential components in modern technology.
- Electrical resistance: is a fundamental property of materials that determines their ability to conduct electricity. The higher the resistance of a material, the more difficult it is for electric current to flow through it.
- A photoresistor: is a type of resistor that exhibits variable resistance depending on the intensity of light it is exposed to. Photoresistors are commonly used in light sensors and automatic control systems to detect changes in light levels and trigger appropriate responses.
These components were shown in below.

When Arshia puts the satellite at a fixed position and angle, the laser hits the photoresistor and it causes the current in the circuit to split and turn on the LED and buzzer.
And that’s how a laser beam communicates with ground station!

Now in Bulgaria 🇧🇬!
Dr. Mehran Mirshams the head of the space research laboratory has been invited to present two seminars, by Sofia Technical University (STU).
STU is one of the Bulgarian lead universities in the field of Aero engineering. The Aero-Transport faculty of STU is going to run Space System Engineering
Master program to make foundation for future space related programs in the country. Two presented seminars has been designed as warmups for students and staff at the University.
The first one “ CubeSat Hands on Training Package “ was about SRL and it’s simulators. The second one “ Small Satellites, Big Future “ reflected small satellite’s revolution and it’s impact on the future space sector.
20-29 October 2023 in Sofia was so productive and impressive.
Beautiful country and welcome people.

Designing the Trajectory of the Exploratory Mission to the Moon
In a groundbreaking research project led by Saba Amjadian under the supervision of Dr. Mehran Mirshams and the guidance of Dr. Mehdi Jafari Nadooshan, the trajectory of an exploratory mission to the moon has been meticulously designed. This research seeks to address the overlooked aspects of the moon’s formation mechanism and its potential as a testing ground for new technologies in planetary exploration.
The study reviews past information and discoveries to shed light on the significant facts about the moon and its formation mechanism that have been ignored. Furthermore, the research showcases the moon as a suitable platform for testing new technologies in the field of planetary exploration.
The main objective of this research is to determine the precise path of the spacecraft, especially in the regimes where multiple objects exert their influence on the spacecraft. To accomplish this, an N-Body astronomical model, capable of delivering more accurate results, is developed through simulation. The model utilizes the astronomical positions of the Earth, the Moon, and the Sun.
To build and test the numerical model for route design, MATLAB is employed. The motion of the Earth, Moon, and Sun is studied and integrated into MATLAB using NASA’s SPICE toolbox for calculations. The circular orbit and trajectory of the LADEE mission serve as a test case to validate the accuracy of the numerical model. Finally, the results obtained from the research are compared with NASA’s GMAT program, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation.
Saba Amjadian, who entered the program in 2020, successfully defended this research, showcasing their expertise and dedication. The defense took place on October 7, 2023. For further inquiries or correspondence, Saba Amjadian can be contacted at Saba.Amjadian@email.kntu.ac.ir.
The accomplishments of this research project have opened new avenues for designing effective trajectories for future exploratory missions to the moon. By addressing overlooked aspects of lunar exploration, this study contributes to the advancement of planetary exploration and paves the way for future scientific discoveries.
Congratulations to Saba Amjadian on his successful defense! 🎉🚀[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]

Nowadays, given the appropriate performance of small satellites, there is a need to increase the storage capacity of electric power in the design and construction of these satellites by our beloved country, Iran, as payloads become more complex. This research focuses on designing and implementing a subsystem for electric power for a 1U CubeSat using supercapacitors in the energy storage section. To do so, first, statistical analysis of existing satellites and the European space standard for power subsystems will be examined, and based on this, the principles of designing and constructing the hybrid energy storage section, which includes both batteries and supercapacitors, will be explained.
The criteria for designing and selecting suitable supercapacitors as well as various circuits for use in the satellite’s electric power subsystem are based on statistical studies and analyses performed to meet the peak power demand of power-hungry equipment. The effort is to increase the advantages of this subsystem and reduce its disadvantages. The main advantages of this research are reducing the volume and charging time of the power subsystem and achieving high-power peaks.
In general, the new technology of supercapacitors increases the reliability of the satellite’s performance. Additionally, by increasing the capacity of the energy storage section, the number of solar panels and batteries reduces, affecting
the overall mass budget of the satellite.
