Introduction of Space Research Laboratory

Due to the development of activities in the field of space science and industry, there is real need in our country to focus on robust research in this special field. Space Research Laboratory was established in 2006 in aerospace engineering faculty of Khaje Nasir-e-din Toosi University so that some of the needs of our country in this field could be answered.

Goals

Main goals of establishment of the Laboratory include the followings:
1- Targeted scientific and research activity with an approach of meeting the current and future space needs of the country
2- Improving the educational quality of students studying in the field of space engineering (Bachelor, Master, and PhD degree programs)
3- Development and enhancement of space culture among different classes of community, especially the adolescent and youth

Main Activities

In order to achieve the above goals, the following routes have been specified as the main topics of activity in the Laboratory and have been followed up.
- Design and codification of space educational, scientific and technological programs for students in different academic grades
- Design, review and codification of specialized educational programs in the field of space engineering for specialists and students
- Design, manufacturing and production of Laboratory equipments supplementing educational programs
- Modeling the performance of space systems in terms of hardware and virtual simulations in a ring
- Design, research and development of engineering samples of equipments and systematic analysis software packages used in the space systems

Capabilities

Space Research Laboratory, with the help of professional staff is ready to offer the following services:

1. Professional counseling in all majors of space fields and industries
2. Designing space systems and their major subsystems
3. Establishing space engineering Laboratoryies
4. Producing professional software (design and analysis) of the space systems
5. Designing, producing, installing and running engineering and industrial Laboratory samples such as simulator reaction wheels with 3 degrees of freedom, virtual magnetic torquers simulator and magnetic torquers tester
6. Holding educational courses at elementary, intermediate, advanced and professional levels

Organizational Structure

Having organized a network consisting of young and capable specialists in terms of operational teams and groups residing at Tehran branch as well as representation branches of the cities, space research Laboratory has succeeded to form a dynamic structure with a high scientific and specialized potential and considerable output. In addition to these scientific cores, the Laboratory also enjoys active support of knowledge-based and technology production companies outside the university as well as research centers inside the university. This organizational structure has allowed conducting a broad range of scientific and research activities with the highest quality standard.

Achievements

Beside educational and research activities, space research Laboratory has succeeded during its activity to provide the scientific and industrial community of the country with valuable achievements. Some of these achievements are described as follows:
- Design, codification and launching specialized educational plan for students through schools space Laboratoryies
- Design, construction and launching the national plan of virtual satellite Laboratory
- Design, construction and production of hardware 3-degree freedom simulator, subset for determination and control of space systems with dumbbell-shaped air bearings
- Design, manufacturing and launching the virtual simulator of underground station for direction and control of space systems
- Design, manufacturing, test and start up of reaction wheel actuator for light satellites
- Recording 3 inventions, publication of more than 130 papers, and holding more than 40 educational programs in beginner, intermediate and advanced levels
